International conference: benefits of cultural heritage for other EU policies

2013-11-12

On 13–14 November, the international conference “Cultural heritage and the EU 2020 strategy – towards an integrated approach” will be held in Vilnius. By pointing out and discussing the diversity of cultural heritage and its interaction with other EU policies, a range of possibilities will be exploited for cultural heritage to be a resource for other policy fields.

The cultural heritage sector implies more than just the protection of monuments, landscapes and archaeological sites. Cultural heritage is closely related to a variety of other policy fields and has a rich potential for stimulating jobs and economic growth. Therefore it can be put to use to promote and pursue the aims of the Europe 2020 strategy. Attendees of this conference will seek and discuss new opportunities for a better integration of cultural heritage into other policy areas and its mainstreaming in the EU-policy framework.

During three thematic seminars, several good practices will demonstrate the added value of cultural heritage for the agricultural, environmental and cohesion policy. These cases will attest how an integrated approach could benefit not only the cultural heritage sector but the above-mentioned sectors as well.

After a more general plenary session focussing on the interaction between cultural heritage and other policy areas such as tourism and education, the Lithuanian presidency will conclude the conference with a final statement and specific recommendations on how to put the mainstreaming principle into action.

This conference aims to bring together professionals and policy makers of different sectors from all over Europe, including representatives of the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, governmental institutions and civil organisations, scientists, and academics. It will provide a rare opportunity to discuss topical issues and promote a better understanding of problems, trends, and goals as well as intersectoral cooperation.
