Kaunas Modernist Architecture and UNESCO
The question of the possible granting of UNESCO World Heritage status to Kaunas modernist architecture was first raised officially in 2013 by initiating discussions and putting on exhibitions.In 2014, in parallel with the preparation of the application for the award of the European Heritage Label (EHL) to Kaunas interwar architecture (the EHL was awarded in 2015), the Kaunas City Municipality Council adopted the decision “On the Approval to Include Kaunas Interwar Modernist Architecture in the UNESCO Tentative World Heritage List”.In 2016, the cross-institutional working group formed by the order of the Minister of Culture prepared a tentative application to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, informing of Lithuania’s intention to define this value and the possibility to inscribe it on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Interdisciplinary Conference “Architectural Quality: an Integrated Approach to Cultural Heritage“
On the occasion of World Architecture Day, an Interdisciplinary Scientific-Practical Conference “Architectural Quality: an Integrated Approach to Cultural Heritage” was held in Vilnius on 7 - 8 October 2019. This year, the 5th Interdisciplinary Conference was focused on the actualization of the criterion of preservation of the immovable cultural heritage. The participants in the Conference mainly focused on promoting inter-institutional cooperation in preserving cultural heritage and improving the quality of the environment. Exhibition of Knowledge, Management and Technology of Cultural Heritage Heritas’19
On 3 and 4 May 2019, the 2nd Exhibition of Knowledge, Management and Technology of Cultural Heritage Heritas’19 was held in the Church of Blessed Virgin Mary of Consolation and in the Augustinian monastery (Savičiaus str. 15, 17, Vilnius).
The purpose of this exhibition is to bring together professionals working in the field of cultural heritage, public and private organizations, scientists, and public figures, and to encourage their cooperation and more effective communication between them in order to know and preserve cultural heritage. Cultural heritage experts from the Baltic States met in Kaunas
While continuing to promote cooperation between Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia in the area of cultural heritage protection, the Department of Cultural Heritage held a business meeting of the Baltic Heritage Committee in Kaunas on 14-15 September this year. In addition to the afore-mentioned states, representatives of the Polish National Heritage Board attended it in the capacity of guests.
