The European Institute of Cultural Routes (hereinafter, the EICR) was established in 1997 in Luxembourg on the basis of a political agreement between the Council of Europe and the government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The main mission of the Institute is to coordinate the implementation of the Programme of Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe ensuring the development of not only existing but also new cultural routes. The key objectives of the EICR are as follows: to observe the existing routes, certify new cultural routes according to the approved criteria, provide consultations and technical assistance to developing networks, conduct monitoring and dissemination of the quality of cultural routes as well as manage technical documentation and the database of European Cultural Routes.

 

Since 1999, the Department of Cultural Heritage has been cooperating with the EICR and conducting specific projects, such as the preparation for developing the Route of Parks and Gardens including the four parks designed in Lithuania by E. F. Andre (in Užutrakis, Trakų Vokė, Lentvaris and Palanga), the participation in the programme of the Council of Europe, the European Route of Jewish Heritage, as well as consultations and seminars on the creation and developing of Lithuanian Cultural Routes and connection to the European networks.

Seminar 'Cultural Routes and Regional Development' in Vilnius
On 15-16 October 2014, a seminar “Cultural Routes and Regional Development” was held in Vilnius. The seminar was aimed at promoting the creation and development of cultural routes in Lithuania and their connection to the network of European Cultural Routes.

Europe – in a Web of the Cultural Routes
Culture and cultural heritage is often promoted by using the Cultural Routes. This is due to the fact that it is a convenient and informative way to present culture and to look at it as an entirety, recognising that it often transcends state borders. Travellers find it attractive to get an overview of a wide-scale cultural panorama of a specific route, to explore specific objects of culture which are of interest to them and to follow the route of such objects from start to finish. All those opportunities are provided by the European Cultural Routes.

Seminar 'European Cultural Routes: Experiences and Opportunities'
On 6 December 2012, Vilnius hosted a seminar on Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe 'European Cultural Routes: Experiences and Opportunities', which attracted a lot of interest. The seminar was attended by about 130 participants – representatives of municipalities, museums, tourism information centres and religious communities as well as scientists and experts of cultural heritage.

A Feasibility Study on Restoration of the Trakų Vokė Park
The most recent result of cooperation between the Department of Cultural Heritage and the European Institute of Cultural Routes is a feasibility study on restoration of the Trakų Vokė Park. In the course of implementation of this project, an analysis was carried out in Lithuania as to what were the changes in one of the parks designed by Eduard Andre in Lithuania, namely, the Trakų Vokė Park.
